After 48+ hours of watching the live war, what struck me most is the capture of 5 to 10 Americans in an ambush near Nasirya.

How will they be treated? Remember that we are talking about a "doomed regime," which basically means we're going to kill them or put them on trial and then execute them. They have nothing to lose. It should have been clear to miliary commanders that any American EPWs would be tortured and killed. Were our soldiers made aware of this?

Probably not. I suspect most of the soldiers in Kuwait/Iraq were getting briefings about the "coalition" they are part of, and they probably believe that the world is behind them. What a rude awakening they will have when they return- IF they return.

I listened to a short segment of Limbaugh today, commenting about Daschle and Clinton's disgust at the Bush Administration's response to future attacks, nearly a year and a half after 9/11(Yahoo! News - Daschle Says Americans Need More Than Duct Tape).

Rush said Hillary was out of line because "the Clintons" are to blame for lack of preparedness. A little know fact that Rush ignores- remember the "push packs" sent to DC after the anthrax attacks? They didn't exist before Bill Clinton. They were the result of his administration. If you read the new best-seller, "Germs," you'll see how Clinton saw biowarfare coming a mile away, and *took steps* to prepare the country.

Bush, on the other hand, got smacked in the face with terrorism, and he has yet to do anything about it other than support tax cuts.

-Establish the Freedom Corps (what's that???)
-End the recession with his now-famous tax cut (didn't work, we're in deeper shit now)
-Create more jobs (we've lost millions of jobs since the last speech)
-Expand trade to boost the economy (in contrast to this, Bush pushed for and got protectionist tarriffs for the steel industry)
-Patient Bill of Rights (nope)
Improved health benefits for war veterans (nope, the Bushies have been cutting benefits to veterans)
-Pension reform (the pension guarantee fund is now almost bankrupt)
-Higher accounting standards (didn't happen)

Why anyone would believe half the stuff in the recent speech, I have *no* idea. I'll eat my socks if he gets $15 billion for AIDS in Africa.

Right explanation, wrong totalitarian regime. Ever hear of a little shindig called Project Paperclip?

Whoah, now that goes a long way back. For those who aren't history buffs, Paperclip was a cold war operation to bring Nazi scientists from defeated Germany to the U.S. to work on military projects, and to deny those resources to the Soviet Union. The most famous of these (especially to us Tom Leherer fans) was Dr. Wernher von Braun, the V-2 scientists, who gave us easily 10 years lead on our ballistic missile technology.

It didn't matter what these people had done under Nazi Germany. Their scientific qualifications were "paperclipped" to their regular immigration forms, and fast-tracked.

Yes, our country has a great history of allying ourselves with total bastards- Nazis, Suharto, Pinochet, Ferdinand Marcos, et al, with the sole justification of "if we don't do it, THEY will."

Well, in geopolitics today, there is no more "THEM" with the resources to oppose us. We have the opportunity to set a moral tone, to truly lead the world towards true democracy.

In Tucson yesterday, I heard an AM talk radio show that blew my socks off. The host (a liberal, for the most part- amazing, I know) spelled out what could be Bush's true goal (I hope): remove the regime in Baghdad; replace it with the regions first Arab democracy to provide an example; with this in place, we can then blow of Saudi Arabia as the fair-weather friends they are; push Iran next towards democracy; eventually push the whole region towards democratic ideals and the world can be at peace, and the terrorists will have no allied governments, thereby defeating terrorism in a permanent sense.

It's a good theory, but faulty in two ways. First, democratic governments are more likely to fall to religious fundamental movements than some autocratic governments (witness the secular government of Iraq). It seems to work in Turkey, but it appears they are ready to fall into a fundamentalist government.

Second, this would ONLY work if the U.S. would truly set up a democratic government and let it be, rather than trying to say "you can be democractic as long as you vote our way, otherwise we bomb the shit out of you." We don't have a good record of this. South Korea, a "democratic" government in a region of non-democracies, is an abject failure as an example, because we will never let them truly rule themselves. We get indignent when they protest U.S. foreign policy, when we should be applauding them for having a unique identity and allowing freedom of peace. Instead, our reaction is the childish "I'm taking my ball and going home if you don't like me." But it is a reaction befitting of our current president, the boy that NEVER grew up.

While on my lunch break, Rush Limbaugh made the comment that the service acadamies (West Point, Annapolis, etc) were "the perfect example of the opposite of this [point systems for things other than academic achievement]. Their football players are a scholar first, and an athelete second. You don't get into an academy just to play football."

While that is somewhat true, the service academies *do* in fact have a point weighting system that includes, of course, leadership activities, public service, athletic ability, and I suspect even race. I had a roommate at West Point who was obviously brought on with playing football in mind. Nice guy. I wouldn't say "dumb as a post," but obviously didn't have to meet the same academic standards I did, with my minimal athletic achievement (I had to take up track to get in).

Salon.com | Joe Conason makes a good comment about Bush's admission into Yale being due to factors other than academic achievement (quotas for the well-born). I scored a good 200 points hire than Bush on my SAT, but I damn sure couldn't get into Yale on them. Would Bush support my suing Yale for discrimination?

I was listening on NPR this morning to a segement on the Bush Admin weighing in on the Univ. of Michigan case before the Supreme Court (Yahoo! News - Bush Opposes College on Race in Supreme Court Case). Bush's speech complained about quotas, penalties "solely on race," and so forth. NPR then interviewed the admissions Dean, who said that he and Michigan agreed with Bush's rhetoric, but that Bush had been badly misinformed about what the UM policy actually is. The policy does not have quotas, the policy (like many other policies) simply has a formula weighing many factors, including public service, leadership activities, etc. The Dean said there were plenty of examples where more academically qualified minorities (based on grades and test scores) were denied admission in favor of a candidate with better marks in these other "well rounded" categories.

Which makes me wonder- if Bush is going to weigh in on important issues like this with a 1-minute briefing (and a pack of lies like this) from Karl Rove, doesn't that explain a lot of our screwed-up foreign policy over the last two years?

I think a trained monkey could do Bush's job.... better.

Bush put all his bets on being able to prove Iraq's product of WMDs. Six weeks lator, even with help from U.S. intelligence sources (supposedly), inspectors haven't found any evidence of WMDs. This puts Bush in a precarious position, especially with no backing from the old 1991 coalition (only Britain- Germany, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, etc, all oppose the current Bush war plan).

Personally, I can think of better ways to spend $200 billion. I mean, we could give every family in Iraq a new house, a Mercedes, some cattle, a DVD player, and a year of paid vacation in exchange for them swearing allegiance to the good old USA, and still have $150 billion left over!!!

PORTLAND -- Investigators worked through Christmas Day to track the man wanted for the aggravated murder of his pregnant wife and three young children, Tillamook County Sheriff Todd Anderson said.Police continued to search for Morris' car, a gray 1993 Dodge Caravan which they described as in very good condition, with Oregon plates WSH-171. The minivan sports bumper stickers honoring the Beaverton-based Christian evangelist Luis Palau and the Promise Keepers on its back windshield.

Edward Morris, 37, was arrested without incident Saturday in a drug store parking lot here, said Baker County District Attorney Matt Shirtcliff. He had been described as "armed and dangerous" but authorities did not say whether he had a weapon. The bodies of Renee Morris, 31, Bryant, 10, Alexis, 8 and Jonathan, 4, were found by hunters Dec. 21 on an isolated road in the Tillamook State Forest. Bush's tax breaks in 2001 handed 10-year rebates to several large companies due to a retroactive cut in the alternative minimum tax (AMT). Companies like GM, IBM, and the like got billions of dollars. Did they use these "tax breaks" to hire new workers and expand the economy? No, not a single one hired a new worker.

Our economy now suffers from too much capital, too much capacity, and not enough consumption. I don't mean to play "class warfare" here, but it is a fact that wealth has been polarizing / shifting upwards for 20 years+. We've reached a point that we have too many companies trying to sell too much stuff, and not enough people have the money to buy it. We've been propping up on consumer credit for 10+ years, but it's all starting to crumble. This recession is far from over. I wonder if we're seeing the first half of a four to five year slide. Helen Thomas, a vetern of the White House press corps, really layed it an Ari the other day:
Ari: Helen, if you think that the people of Iraq are in a position to dictate who their dictator is,
I don't think that has been what history has shown.
Thomas: I think many countries don't have -- people don't have the decision -- including us!

Welcome to my weblog. Why am I doing this? Is it just because everyone else is doing this? No, I did run a political web page from 1994-2001, but dropped it due to the inordinate size and unweildiness of maintaining it, moving it from server to server, etc. We'll see if blogging fixes all that. I hope to expand on the "politics only" content as well, limiting my postings to handy links and the really good stuff. The rest of the space should be filled with typical self-serving blog-related comments about my dogs, what I find on the bottom of my shoes, and musing about life, ethics, etc. Typical blog stuff to be speed-read and ignored.
